Born in Otley (West Yorkshire), though I grew up in a Village called Burley in Wharfedale. I first got into bikes aged 9 when my dad, a bike enthusiast himself, brought home a tatty little blue Ital-jet 50 automatic. So most weekends little Gavin Lupton in his Roland rat wellies would be scrambling around Ilkley Moor scaring the odd sheep or walker, (20yrs on... I apologise.)
I often went with my Dad on the back of his GSXR 1100 to race meetings, and that's where I got my desire to be a motorcycle racer when I grew up.I tried to get into the sport aged 13 by joining the Junior Road Racing Association but there was no way my paper round could cover the costs and at the time Dad wasn't in a position to give much financial help. So I had to wait until I was earning a decent wage and at 21 that's when I bought a Suzuki RGV 250 from Padgetts. After a few seasons racing in formula 400, I realised that I really needed to get a 400 to do well in this class. However, in practise sessions we would often go out with the 125 GPs and they would wipe the floor with us. I thought how cool are these things?,That was it decision made... I'm going 125 racing.
SMO Racing rider - Gavin Lupton

Plus, they cost a fortune to maintain. So with all the poor results and huge running costs, I was tempted to hang my very second hand leathers up and pack in racing altogether.
Then Jason Dobson, himself an ex-NYRRSC sponsored rider, came along with the intention of stepping down himself and setting up a team of his own, he asked me if I would like to pilot his competitive 125 in this years Thundersport GP3 and that’s what we’re doing so...
